Welcome to Spring
The sunshine has arrived and I don't know about you, but it makes me feel energized, happy and full of life again. Spring is definitely my favourite season as it is all about colour and new life.
However, some of us are facing a few challenges right now in this economic climate, and a lot of uncertainty which brings with it a feeling of discomfort.
Want to know how to get back in control and be more certain about the future?
Dealing with Uncertainty
"Uncertainty causes discomfort and life can feel so out of balance and out of control"
Having some certainty in our life is one of our basic human needs, and when we feel we don't have enough of it, we can get overwhelmed, uncomfortable and completely out of balance in all areas of our life.
We are all different, and some of us need more certainty than others about different things, but we all have that basic need to know that we can eat tonight, have somewhere to sleep, pay the bills, be in a strong relationship, educate our children or whatever is important to you to know you can do or have.
When our basic needs are challenged we will automatically search for ways to get some certainty back, and this can mean violating our values to get it as this need for some certainty is so strong. For example, if someone was facing redundancy they could begin to get uncertain about money and how they would support their family. If their values are around honesty and integrity, it could get to a point where these are put to one side in order to get more certain about money and work.
If we violate our values, we then begin to feel bad about ourselves and low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence can also contribute to the situation. So learning how to deal with uncertainty can be a great help. It doesn't necessarily mean that it'll all be ok without taking any action, but it will help keep us clear in our thinking and focused on the outcome we really want.
Often our greatest challenges become our best opportunities, but if we are fraught with anxiety and fear we may not see these opportunities as they present themselves to us. Learning to embrace some uncertainty can be healthy. It can give us the drive, focus and determination we sometimes need to take action. When we are in control, we feel in balance and then we can see things with clarity and perspective.
In these times there could be many people facing uncertainty in one or more areas of their life. While a coach maybe the last thing they think of using, it could be the best investment they will make. Getting help to turn a perceived negative situation around, such as redundancy, stress, relationship break-ups etc, getting that focus about what they want the outcome to be, and having the clarity of mind to actually spot the opportunities to turn that situation around could mean the difference between spiraling down into a negative pit or moving forward with new options, a new life and a positive future ahead.
